Scientists agree with us at last!

For the past 50 years, I have been warning of the dangers of petrol and diesel fumes, and the effect they have upon the health, particularly of the young, infirm and elderly. Now at last Scientists agree... as you can see by the recent newspaper article on the right.

As many of you will be aware, I have been warning of the dangers of breathing in vehicle exhaust fumes since the late Sixties. They contain carbon monoxide, sulphur dioxide, and nitrous oxides, all of which are highly poisonous gases. Well, excuse me, but that is why people use car exhausts to commit suicide!

And yet still manufacturers and politicians drag their feet on cleaner fuel, - because the whole global economy is based on oil, - black gold, - texas tea, - call it what you will, - AND THE OIL BARONS AND POLITICIANS ARE FAR MORE INTERESTED IN MAKING PROFIT THAN THEY ARE ON THE HEALTH OF YOU, YOUR CHILDREN AND YOUR GREAT-GRANDCHIDLREN.

INDEED, THEY ARE MORE INTERESTED IN MAKING A QUICK BUCK THAN THEY ARE IN SAVING THE PLANET!

NO FUEL LIKE AND OLD FUEL

Once again, greedy energy companies are hiking the price of gas and electricity by almost 20% without a thought for pensioners and ordinary families who will undoubtedly be forced into fuel poverty.

Furthermore, due to The ConDem’s cockeyed take on ‘Green Energy’ – what’s green about Nuclear Power and coal?) they will be encouraged to hike the price in coming years by yet another 30%. BUT WHY?

On our recent visit to The Scottish Highlands, we found at The Findhorn Foundation, living proof of how it is possible to generate your own green energy without having to rely on the Big Privatised Companies. Indeed, we’d like to see everyone doing this, forcing the greed culture of private enterprise into the gutter and down the sewers along with News International!

We have been campaigning for years for the government to construct every new building with a green roof.

Now we are pushing that idea further, by starting a campaign for every new building not only to include a green roof, but also solar panels or wind turbines.

Pete was told some time ago that solar panels cannot be fitted to green roofs, - but here at Findhorn, there is living proof that it CAN be done! (see picture right).

Furthermore, why not give grants to people of lower incomes to have green roofs, solar panels and wind turbines. The rich can buy their own!

Now THAT would show that the government really DOES care about the environment, rather that helping their cronies in industry to make more money at our expense.

LOOMING THREAT TO OUR OCEANS AND IT'S WILDLIFE

I predicted this way back in the seventies, - and now, at last, scientists are in accordance with my views: Let's hope its not too late!

Pollution and global warming are pushing the world's oceans to the brink of a mass extinction of marine life unseen for tens of millions of years, a consortium of scientists have warned.

Dying coral reefs, biodiversity ravaged by invasive species, expanding open-water "dead zones," toxic algae blooms, the massive depletion of big fish stocks -- all are accelerating, they said in a report compiled during an April meeting in Oxford of 27 of the world's top ocean experts.

Sponsored by the International Programme on the State of the Ocean (IPSO), the review of recent science found that ocean health has declined further and faster than dire forecasts only a few years ago.

These symptoms, moreover, could be the harbinger of wider disruptions in the interlocking web of biological and chemical interactions that scientists now call the Earth system.

All five mass extinctions of life on the planet, reaching back more than 500 million years, were preceded by many of the same conditions now afflicted the ocean environment, they said.

"The results are shocking," said Alex Rogers, an Oxford professor who heads IPSO and co-authored the report. "We are looking at consequences for humankind that will impact in our lifetime."

Three main drivers are sickening the global marine environment, and all are a direct consequence of humans activity: global warming, acidification and a dwindling level oxygen, a condition known as hypoxia.

Up to now, these and other impacts have been studied mainly in isolation. Only recently have scientists began to understand how these forces interact.

"We have underestimated the overall risks, and that the whole of marine degradation is greater than the sum of its parts," Rogers said. "That degradation is now happening at a faster rate than predicted."

Well, excuse me, but I ahve been warning about this for many many years, - it is mentioned in my environmental books THIS GARDEN EARTH and VANDALS IN THE GARDEN.

WHAT WE MUST NEVER FORGET IS THAT ALL FORMS OF LIFE ON THIS PLANET ARE INTERLINKED. WHAT HAPPENS ON THE SURFACE OF THE EARTH WILL HAVE A DIRECT EFFECT ON THE RIVERS AND OCEANS, AND VICE-VERSA.
